What if....week 2
After more research,
we decided to concentrate on one aspect of homelessness and all agreed that it is impossible to try and solve homelessness eantirely.
We found that we had the most research on health of those who sleep rough.,
We managed to identify a problem and how to solve that.>>> written on the Rationale sheet

What if.....week 1
Brief: Establish a problem that affects some sector of the general public in Leeds. The solution must be resolved, designed and presented in the public domain.
Deliverables: compelling fact based evidence. Photogrpahic record of the solution
This brief is a group project and we were all put into a group of 6 accordingly to our initial themes from the previous brief: photogrpahy 100.
Each team member had similar themse to their photographs and that was our starting point.
Will Duffy, Hazel Gage, Nick Morgan, Maryem, Gemma and me.
Our themes were:
Contrasting colour
Dark, kight and things that shine bright in the night
Might-time, Close ups
Documenting Changes
After we were assigned to our groups, eacg memmer of our group went away and did our own research on what problems there are in Leeds. This was done mostly through, finding NEwspaper articles and the internet
We came up with a few main ideas that seem to be the most interesting and relevant.
Graffiti, Vandalism
Homelessness
Theft
The group decided to go with Homelessness. So, again, we all went and find our own indivual research to back up this problem.
From the group, we collected both primary and secondary research.
A questionaire was created and that can be accessed through
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=211868771638&ref=mf
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/63HCKZK
One of our group members also spoke to a volunteer at the Crypt, a homeless centre in Leeds city centre
This is what we decided to do as the result of our research
Who? The general public
What? Informing and educating them about how to help the homeless
Why? Because there is a lack in knowledge of how to help, volunteers
How?? ....A high inpact poster??
We had a presentation on the Friday and pitched in our ideas,
The feedback suggested that there was a sufficient amount of research but a lot of people do already help and know how to ..so, intead of just informing , try to do something else?
We needed to find a niche in the market
The group went home and did more research over the weekend

No News Is Good News:Message and Delivery
Brief: 3 posters, a3 size, 2:1 format.
1 poster had to be completely a type based poster, 1 is purely image based and the third one will be of both.
We were allowed to use two colours plus stock.
Ideas of gone into this brief ( in my skecth book ) and this is a summary
I used the information I found in the previous research brief and I found this one fact that really interested me.
Every day in the UK 7 million slices of bread get thrown away.
So, I decided that my set of posters would be based on that fact
I also worked out that with that amount of bread, in one year UK wastes 2.5 slices of bread
and that can cover more than twice the area of Ethiopia....
And these are the final results of my posters

No News Is Good News:Research
The brief: create a body of research based upon a headline from a newspaper bought on 17th October 2009.
For this brief. I picked an article: "Buy one get one free later-Tesco changes offer to cut food waste"
So, the concept of this brief is about how super markets are taking actions to help prevent global warming.
I came up with several ideas on how to tackle this. We were asked to present ten and then narrow them down to three.
1. What are big supermarkets doing to reduce consumers waste eg. deals like buy one get one free later
2. Consumers waste and its effect on the environment
3 Are they really carbon conscience?... this is abot whether big super markets actually care or are they using this environmental issue to boost their popularity
After a lot of research. ( articles, journals, facts, WRAP statements ( waste and resources action programme)) We were asked to pick one idea to take to our necxt brief.
I decided, because I found alot of facts on how much wasting food is costing the earth, to take on the idea of consumers waste in the UK.

Colour Theory 2
This week, the whole group were a asked to lay out all our coloured objects according to the colour wheel.
In the second part of the session,in a pari, we picked five objects from our colour group (red) and then a few from the group of our complimentary colour which was green.
We were given a range of coloured papers to use as a background and compare there effects on our coloured objects. What we were expecting were things like, a red colour object would look warmer on a certain coloured paper and colder on another.
These some examples of what we achieved.

Colour Theory 1
We were asked to bring in ten coloured objects and my given colour was red.In the group about 4-6 people were asked bring in the same colour objects.
With my group (red) we were asked to arrange the red objects in a systematic way, either arraning them from dark to bright or etc. We chose to arrange ours from the most blue to the most yellowy red.
I found that the red had so many variables that it was difficult to place some of the objects along out line. Some of the objects were'nt either closer to purple nor closer to yellow but was tinted so it looked more pink or just lighter.
The second task was to pick ten objects from all the red ones and match each one to a pantone and this is what we came up with
Addidas Hoodie-Pantone 711
Apple-Pantone 180 c
Duck Tape- Pantone 7426 c
Hair Spray- Pantone 206 c
Bag-Pantone 7428 c
Ribbon-Panton 216 c
Lip Gloss-Pantone 711 c
Candle- Pantone 7428 c
Glue Lid- Pantone 032 c

Visual Language-3D letter
In this visual language session we were creating a 2 dimensional letterform on surfaces which are on different planes. ach group had to breing in a number of boxes ranging from a size of a matchstick box to a shoe box. We then arranged the boxes to overlap each other when looked atthrough a view finder the boxes then will look like a flat plane .
The aim of this project is to creat a letterform that, if you look at it through one particular angle it will look like a 2D letterform , in this case, the letter M .If you move from that point and look at it in any other angle the letter will become unrocognisable.
This was a group brief and i would have probably been impossible to do by yourself. We constantly needed someone to be looking at the work through a view finder and guide another person to place the right mark on the right box.
Our way of tackling this was to take of a photograph of the arranged boxes looked through the view finder and then photoshop out letter over the image and then print it off.
From looking at the photograph we can then identify which boxes contain which part of the letter form.
We started off by drawing an outline of each part of the letter onto the box and then sticking pieces of black card cut into the shape needed over the outlines.
This was the final outcome ( it was unfinished as we didnt have enough time)
